Vernaccia di San Gimignano belongs to early-mid ripening varieties and possesses good vigor. The clusters are quite large, weighing up to 400 g, conical, often winged, and of medium density. The berries are medium-sized, round, greenish-yellow or golden in color with thick skin, heavy bloom, and juicy flesh with a neutral taste.

The leaves are medium-sized, round or pentagonal, three-lobed. The variety is moderately resistant to fungal diseases and not frost-resistant, adapting well to climatic factors. This is a wine grape variety intended for the production of dry white wines with a mineral profile and an almond aftertaste.

There are other varieties named Vernaccia that are unrelated to the Tuscan one: the white variety Vernaccia di Oristano from Sardinia and the rare red variety Vernaccia Nera from the Marche region.
