Variety description

The plant is vigorous and high-yielding. Leaves are medium-sized, rounded, usually five-lobed, sometimes three-lobed. Clusters are medium-sized, dense, cylindrical-conical in shape, often with a wing. Berries are medium-sized, spherical, and covered with thick black-purple skin. The variety is late-ripening and shows high resistance to fungal diseases and berry rot.

Genetically, the variety is related to Garnacha, Cannonau, and Tocai Rosso. Wine from Vernaccia Nera has a pronounced structure, high acidity, and a complex aromatic profile with notes of black berries, spices, and muscat tones. The primary purpose is the production of red wines, in particular the sparkling wine Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG, using a technology that involves partial drying of the harvest, as well as other wines from the Serrapetrona and Colli Maceratesi regions.
