The variety was obtained in France as a seedling of the American variety Clinton. Currently, the primary status of Vialla is as a rootstock; its use for wine production is limited or not recommended due to specific product characteristics, such as low acidity.

The plant has high vigor with limited fertility. The variety is sensitive to drought, requires sufficient moisture, is extremely susceptible to chlorosis, and tolerates only a low content of active lime in the soil. It is well adapted to acidic and depleted soils, such as sandy or granitic ones.

It exhibits good grafting compatibility with European varieties, as the diameter of its shoots is comparable to the scion. It has weak to moderate resistance to phylloxera and moderate resistance to the nematode Meloidogyne arenaria. Maintenance is complicated due to the large number of tendrils on the vine.
