The variety is autochthonous to the alpine region of northeastern Italy. This name encompasses a group of related clonal varieties historically grown in Trentino-Alto Adige and Germany.

The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and high yield, while it ripens late and requires warm sites with good insolation. The pergola vine training system is traditionally used.

The wine grape variety is characterized by a moderate alcohol content in the final product and soft tannins. The form of the variety known as Trollinger possesses high frost resistance but is susceptible to rot, powdery mildew, and downy mildew.
