The variety is autochthonous to Greece, with the main growing region being the island of Lefkada. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and high yield. Leaves are large, nearly round, and slightly three-lobed. Clusters are medium or large, conical or cylindrical-conical in shape, and compact. Berries are medium, round or oval, dark blue or violet-blue in color with thick skin.
The grapes ripen in the second half of September. The variety shows resistance to most typical grapevine diseases but is susceptible to downy mildew. It prefers calcareous soils at low altitudes above sea level, as problems with complete crop ripening can occur at high altitudes.
The purpose of the variety is exclusively for wine production. Due to the high content of pigments and tannins, the wines have a powerful structure, deep color, and notes of eucalyptus, cedar, spices, and black berries. It is often used in blends to increase the tannin content and color intensity of wine.
