Grape Anthracnose

Vitis vinifera L.

A fungal disease of grapes caused by Elsinoë ampelina, affecting all green parts of the plant and characterized by the appearance of necrotic spots with a distinct margin.

The primary causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Elsinoë ampelina (conidial stage Gloeosporium ampelophagum). The pathogen is highly adaptable to environmental conditions and is capable of producing up to 30 generations of spores in a single growing season.

Anthracnose affects leaves, shoots, inflorescences, and berries. Brown spots with a dark margin appear on the leaves, leading to shot-hole symptoms, while deep ulcers form on the shoots, causing tissue brittleness. Infection of the berries manifests as characteristic depressed spots with a dark border, known as the bird's-eye symptom.
