Fragrance assessment in Narcissus is conducted using an organoleptic scoring method during variety trials or via gas chromatography to determine the composition of volatile organic compounds such as benzyl acetate, linalool, β-ocimene, and indole. Different species, including Narcissus poeticus and Narcissus tazetta, possess unique chemotypes that define odor intensity.

The emission of aromatic substances is a dynamic process that follows diurnal rhythms with peak intensity during daylight hours. The formation of the fragrance profile is influenced by growing conditions, particularly the temperature regime in the 5–15°C range, as well as the stage of flower maturity, with freshly cut inflorescences showing the highest emission of compounds.
