Peduncle

The peduncle is an important morphological trait indicating the transition of a plant into the generative phase of development. Its length, strength, and color are indicators of marketability for many crops and influence the efficiency of mechanized harvesting by ensuring uniform height and reducing raw material losses.

The expression of the trait is determined by the interaction between the cultivar genotype and environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and nutrient availability. If these factors are disrupted during the formation of generative organs, peduncle development can be suppressed.

The trait is evaluated during variety testing on a representative sample during the peak flowering period using linear measurements in centimeters or millimeters and scoring scales for qualitative characteristics. The data obtained are interpreted by comparing them with reference cultivars, as optimal values depend on the specific crop and the standards adopted for the cultivation zone.
