Fusarium wilt in hybrids of Solanum lycopersicum and Solanum habrochaites is caused by the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici and manifests as systemic vascular wilting. Resistance is provided by the introgression of I-2 and I-3 genes against races 2 and 3, respectively.

The causative agent of the disease is the soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, which infects the vascular system of the plant. The pathogen is represented by three physiological races, with race 3 capable of overcoming the resistance provided by common I and I-2 genes. Upon infection, the fungus colonizes the xylem, which causes leaf chlorosis and plant death due to the disruption of water and nutrient transport.
In breeding programs involving interspecific hybrids, resistance genes I-2 and I-3 are used to control the disease. Although the wild species S. habrochaites is a source of resistance to other pathogens, hybrids are tested for the presence of standard resistance markers regarding Fusarium wilt. Additionally, breeding control is carried out for resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici, which causes Fusarium crown and root rot.
