Clubroot of Chinese Cabbage

An obligate disease of Chinese cabbage caused by the myxomycete Plasmodiophora brassicae, which leads to the formation of galls on roots and blocks plant nutrition. The disease can cause yield losses of up to 60% due to poor head formation or its complete absence.

The causative agent is the soil-borne slime mold Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin, whose resting spores persist in the soil for up to 20 years. In Chinese cabbage, the disease progresses particularly aggressively, causing pathological growths in the form of galls on the roots. Damage to the root vascular system leads to a loss of turgor, yellowing of leaves, and suppression of the aerial part of the plant.

Breeding Chinese cabbage for clubroot resistance focuses on the use of specific resistance genes, such as CRa, CRb, CRA05, and CRd. An effective approach is considered to be the pyramiding of multiple genes to overcome the high virulence of the pathogen and the variability of its physiological races.
