Three types of development are distinguished: absence of rhizomes in the subspecies Festuca rubra commutata, moderate development in Festuca rubra trichophylla, and strong development in Festuca rubra rubra.

The presence and extent of rhizomes directly determine the agrotechnical qualities of the crop. Forms with strong rhizome development are capable of forming a long-lasting and durable sod, which is critical for turf and slope stabilization, and also provide the plant with high resistance to trampling and drought.

In agrocenoses, rhizomatous forms of red fescue exhibit greater aggressiveness and the ability to dominate in the sward compared to bunch-type forms. The choice of a specific subspecies depends on the need for self-repairing turf cover or specific objectives for sward utilization.
