Diseases
Trifolium pratense L.
A polyetiological disease of red clover caused by a complex of soil-borne pathogens, which limits the longevity of stands and leads to plant mortality.
In the reference 20 varieties crop Red clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
The primary causal agents of the disease are fungi of the genus Fusarium, including Fusarium oxysporum f. trifolii, Fusarium avenaceum, and Fusarium culmorum. The pathogenic complex also includes Cylindrocarpon destructans, as well as species of the genera Phoma, Pythium, Sclerotinia trifoliorum, and Verticillium dahliae.
On seedlings, the disease manifests as browning of the hypocotyl and root, leading to plant death. In mature plants in the second or third year of growth, dark brown spots form on the roots, the core becomes decayed, and browning of the vascular bundles is observed in cross-section.
Externally, the infection manifests as wilting and death of the plants, with mycelial growth or sporodochia potentially forming at the base of the stems under humid conditions. Resistance of clover to root rot is a polygenic trait, and efforts to improve it are conducted through selection on artificial infection backgrounds.
