Variety traits
Tillering is the ability of cereal crops to form lateral shoots from the tillering node, which determines the variety's biological potential to create a productive stand.
Mentioned in descriptions 4 028 varieties reference book.
Tillering is an important element of yield structure, reflecting the biological capacity of cereals to form lateral shoots. A distinction is made between total tillering, which includes all shoots, and productive tillering, which counts only those stems that have formed a filled ear or panicle.
The index is measured in units per plant and is determined during yield structure analysis before harvest by counting the shoots of typical representatives of the variety. For modern winter wheat varieties, the optimal productive tillering coefficient is considered to be 2–3, and for spring wheat — 1.1–1.3.
The value of tillering depends on the interaction between the variety's genetics and environmental conditions, including stand density, timing and depth of sowing, availability of moisture and nutrients, as well as temperature regime. An important criterion when evaluating a variety is the stability of this indicator, which reduces the risk of sharp yield fluctuations when weather conditions change.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
