Cold hardiness of fig

The cold hardiness of figs is assessed by their ability to withstand winter sub-zero temperatures. Under laboratory conditions, the adaptability of cultivars is determined by the activity of catalase and peroxidase enzymes: in resistant forms, catalase activity increases under low-temperature stress.

Young plants are damaged at -10°C, while mature specimens are sensitive to temperatures below -9…-15°C. Although some cultivars show relative adaptability, at temperatures around -28°C the aerial part inevitably suffers frost damage, and viability is maintained solely due to the root system's ability to regenerate shoots.

Figs are extremely sensitive to late spring frosts following thaws and prolonged exposure to low temperatures, which destroy fruit buds or the entire annual growth. Due to these biological characteristics, the crop requires mandatory covering or container cultivation in regions with severe winters.
