The most significant causal agents of nematode diseases in rice are Aphelenchoides besseyi, which causes white tip disease, Ditylenchus angustus, which induces ufra disease, as well as Meloidogyne graminicola, Hirschmanniella oryzae, and Heterodera oryzicola, which infest the root system under both upland and irrigated cultivation conditions.

Symptoms include whitening and twisting of leaf tips in cases of A. besseyi infestation, stem distortion and panicle rot within the leaf sheath caused by D. angustus, and the formation of characteristic hook-shaped galls on the roots accompanied by chlorosis upon M. graminicola infection. The search for resistant accessions is being conducted among Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima species, with identification restricted to quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the absence of broad implementation of standardized resistance genes.
