Grape productivity

Grape productivity is defined as the combination of biological and economic outcomes, measured through crop structural components, including fruitfulness and fertility coefficients, rather than just the final berry mass per vine.

To assess grape productivity, a system of structural indicators is used, including the number of shoots per vine or unit area, the percentage of fruitful shoots, the fruitfulness coefficient (the ratio of the number of clusters to the total number of developed shoots), and the fertility coefficient (the number of clusters per fruitful shoot). Specialized parameters are also applied, such as specific economic shoot productivity, which links the yield to leaf area, and seed productivity, used when evaluating tolerance to phylloxera.

The productivity level is evaluated on a point scale from 1 to 9, with the fruitfulness coefficient in various cultivars ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 and higher. Given that grapevines have a low tendency for self-regulation of inflorescence load, an agronomist must use fertility indicators to calculate the optimal load during pruning, as overloading the vine inevitably reduces sugar content, berry size, and the overall plant vitality.
