Schioppettino is an indigenous variety originating from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The plant has moderate vigor and pentagonal, three- or five-lobed leaves. The bunches are characterized as large, cylindrical, elongated in shape, and of medium density.
The berries are medium-sized, elliptical, and blue-black in color with a thick waxy skin. It is a mid-late maturing variety that requires careful site selection, as it is prone to sunburn and fungal diseases, which makes its productivity irregular.
The variety is intended exclusively for the production of wines characterized by high acidity, distinct tannins, and aromas of wild berries, musk, violets, and black pepper. In the past, the variety was close to extinction, but its cultivation was restored at the end of the 20th century.
