Variety description

10 August 2026

The name unites a number of different varieties, among which Schiava Grossa, Schiava Gentile, and Schiava Grigia are distinguished. The varieties have many synonyms, such as Black Hamburg and Frankenthal. In a historical context, the group has been known since the late Middle Ages and is key to the winemaking of the Alto Adige region.

Plants of the group are characterized by the presence of bisexual flowers, while the morphological traits of leaves, bunches, and berries vary depending on the specific variety. The group is distinguished by low resistance to downy mildew, rots, and frosts. Bushes of the Schiava Grossa variety are described as medium-vigour.

The grapes are used primarily as a wine grape variety for the production of light, ruby-colored wines with low alcohol content and soft tannins. The wines possess fruity aromas with notes of cherry, blackberry, violet, and almond bitterness, and are intended for consumption at a young age.
