The variety belongs to the Schiava group and is known by the synonyms Trollinger, Gross Vernatsch, and Frankenthal. The plant is characterized by medium to vigorous growth, thick yellow-brown vines, and a tendency for lateral shoot development. Leaves are large, three- or five-lobed.

Clusters are large to very large, dense, and cylindrical-conical in shape. Berries are large, round, dark red-purple or blue-black in color, covered with a thick skin, and the flesh is fleshy and juicy. The variety has high yield and resistance to winter frosts, but is susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew.
