Leaf spot of Festulolium

A complex of fungal diseases of Festulolium caused by pathogens of its parent species, fescue and ryegrass. It manifests as necrotic spots of various shapes, leading to yellowing and senescence of the leaf blade.

Leaf spot in Festulolium is caused by fungi of the genera Drechslera, Bipolaris, Exserohilum (helminthosporiosis), Septoria (septoria blight), as well as the blast pathogen Pyricularia grisea. These diseases are inherited from the parent forms, as specific mapped resistance genes or highly specialized pathotypes for this hybrid have not been identified in the literature.

Visually, the infection manifests as punctate or elongated oval spots of light brown and dark brown color, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Under conditions of high humidity and favorable temperatures, the spots coalesce, causing premature “scorch” and yellowing of the leaf tips, which significantly reduces the nutritional value of the sward.
