The main causative agent of the disease is Puccinia coronata, with the form Puccinia coronata f. sp. lolii being specific to the ryegrass component of the hybrid. Species of fungi that infect grasses in general, including the stem rust pathogen Puccinia graminis, can also parasitize the crop. Symptoms appear as orange-brown uredinia, which are replaced by black telia towards the end of the growing season.
Festulolium resistance is achieved through the introgression of chromosome segments from meadow fescue or tall fescue into the ryegrass genome.
