Green manure — White mustard

Sinapis alba L.

White mustard as a green manure is valued for its phytosanitary properties, its ability to convert poorly available forms of phosphorus and potassium into accessible compounds, and its high cold tolerance.

In the reference 59 varieties crop White mustard, where this is mentioned in the description.

White mustard has a high growth rate, forming sufficient biomass within 40–60 days, and its roots can reach depths of up to 150 cm. The crop's root exudates contain glucosinolates, which suppress soil-borne pathogens and pests. Unlike oriental mustard (Brassica juncea), it is an “excluder” plant, accumulating heavy metals primarily in its roots, which limits their translocation to the above-ground biomass.

When using this crop, it is important to consider its membership in the Brassicaceae family, which precludes planting it before other cruciferous crops to avoid shared diseases and pests. On heavy clay soils, the decomposition of biomass occurs more slowly, so the optimal time for incorporation is considered to be the phase before stem lignification, upon reaching a height of 15–25 cm.
