Variety traits

Apricot Transportability

Prunus armeniaca L.

A trait determining the suitability of apricot fruits for transportation, evaluated through flesh firmness and skin strength. It is a key factor in selecting cultivars for commercial horticulture and planning harvest schedules.

In the reference 44 varieties crop Apricot, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate apricot transportability, physical-mechanical methods are used, particularly measuring the firmness of the flesh and skin using penetrometers with an 8 mm plunger. In field practice, this indicator is also determined organoleptically by assessing the fruits' susceptibility to cracking and their resistance to deformation under simulated transport conditions.

High transportability is characterized by a combination of dense tissue and strong skin, which allows for maintaining marketability during long-distance shipping. Low transportability is inherent in cultivars with tender flesh, which, due to a high susceptibility to damage, are suitable primarily for industrial processing or local sale.

The expression of this trait is influenced by both the genetic characteristics of the cultivar and external growing conditions. For example, fruits grown in specific mountainous microzones often demonstrate higher density indices and, consequently, better transportability compared to fruits from other agroclimatic conditions.
