Triticum aestivum L.
A group of viral diseases of common wheat caused by specific pathogens (WSMV, WRWMV, soil-borne mosaic virus), which are transmitted by mites, leafhoppers, or soil-borne organisms.
In the reference 60 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
Three main types of viral mosaics are characteristic of common wheat: wheat streak, wheat rosette (Russian winter wheat mosaic), and soil-borne. The causal agents are, respectively, WSMV (genus Tritimovirus), transmitted by the mite Aceria tosichella, WRWMV (genus Cytorhabdovirus), spread by leafhoppers of the species Psammotettix striatus and Macrosteles laevis, and SBWMV (genus Furovirus), transmitted via the soil-borne organism Polymyxa graminis.
External symptoms include chlorotic spots, streaks, or stripes parallel to the veins, leading to leaf deformation, stunting, suppressed tillering, and ear sterility. With WRWMV, phloem necrosis is observed, while soil-borne mosaic manifests as characteristic "green islands" against a background of yellowing leaves in the early spring period.
Genetic protection of common wheat is based on the introduction of specific resistance genes, such as Wsm1, Wsm2, and Wsm3 for controlling WSMV, as well as the Ym2 gene against yellow mosaic virus. Breeding programs also include work on editing the susceptibility factor gene TaeIF4E to increase resistance to viral infections.
