Apple bloom

Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.

A natural protective formation on the epidermis of apple fruits, consisting of cutin, lipids, and resins, which serves a barrier function during storage.

In pomological practice, the apple bloom is assessed primarily visually during variety trials. Experts record the presence, absence, or degree of the bloom using descriptive categories such as matte or waxy surface, however, standardized quantitative scales in metric units are absent.

This trait is an important biological indicator of fruit storability and moisture retention capacity. A more pronounced wax layer is characteristic of many winter varieties, providing them with better shelf life, whereas in summer varieties, the bloom is often less developed. During storage, the state of the bloom may change, leading to increased skin tackiness.
