The laboratory germination capacity of barley seeds is determined by germinating four samples of 100 seeds each on sand or filter paper at a temperature of +20 °C. The count of normally germinated seeds is performed on the 7th–8th day; values of 92% and above are considered high, while figures below 87–92% indicate that the seed lot is substandard.
This parameter is mandatory when calculating the seeding rate by weight using the sowing value index, as it influences plant stand density and prevents thin or excessively dense crop stands. Agronomists take into account that field emergence is usually lower than laboratory germination due to the influence of soil and climatic conditions, which requires increased attention to protecting weakened seedlings from soil-borne pathogens.
