Protected Ground Radish

Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus

Growing radishes in protected ground requires strict temperature control and the selection of shade-tolerant varieties to prevent bolting and the elongation of root crops.

In the reference 148 varieties crop Radish, where this is mentioned in the description.

When growing radishes in greenhouses, it is critically important to consider its biology as a long-day plant. During the autumn-winter period, it is necessary to use specialized shade-tolerant varieties, otherwise the plants become elongated and root formation is delayed. Planting density in commercial conditions is 300–400 plants/m² given a compact leaf rosette of 5–7 leaves.

The temperature regime in the greenhouse requires precision: in the absence of supplemental lighting on cloudy days, the optimal soil temperature is 8–12 °C, and 12–16 °C on sunny days. The difference between day and night temperatures should not exceed 3–4 °C, as excessive heat leads to root deformation. To obtain produce without bitterness and cavities, the use of hydroponics with drip irrigation is effective.

In protected ground conditions, it is unacceptable to plant radishes after other cruciferous crops due to the accumulation of common pathogens such as 'black leg' (damping-off). The technology of continuous production requires hybrids to have high uniformity of maturation and a marketable yield of at least 3.5 kg/m².
