Winter protection of artichoke

Cynara cardunculus L.

An agrotechnical method for protecting the artichoke root system, aimed at preventing frost damage and critical for avoiding waterlogging of the root crown.

Before covering, the vegetative part of the artichoke is pruned, leaving a stub about 30 cm high, and sanitary cleaning is carried out to remove diseased or damaged leaves. The base of the plant is mulched with an organic layer of at least 30 cm, over which spruce branches or non-woven materials are placed for thermal insulation and snow retention.

The primary goal of covering is to protect against freeze-thaw cycles and prevent root rot, to which the artichoke is extremely sensitive under conditions of moisture stagnation. To ensure the root crown remains dry, waterproof materials are often laid over the mulch to prevent precipitation from entering the root zone.
