ActiveCastanea sativa Mill. · Sweet chestnut
PEDRO URQUIJO LANDALUCE
10 August 2026
The tree is characterized by vigorous growth, reaching a height of 20–25 meters. Fruiting begins 4–5 years after planting. The variety shows high resistance to Phytophthora and bark cancer, but is sensitive to cold and waterlogged soil.
The fruits are large, bright red-brown, and are distinguished by a sweet taste and ease of peeling. The nuts fall together with the involucre. The variety requires well-drained, slightly acidic soils, does not tolerate calcareous soils, and needs sites protected from the wind.
The variety has medium-quality pollen. It can be self-pollinating, but planting pollinators is recommended for stable yields. The variety itself is also often used as a pollinator for other chestnut varieties.
