The variety is a Euro-Japanese hybrid, with the classification often noting a predominance of traits of the species Castanea crenata. The plant is cultivated as a fruit tree to produce edible nuts, which are distinguished by good flavor qualities.

The breeding of this hybrid was aimed at increasing the resistance of plantings to ink disease, caused by pathogens of the genus Phytophthora, to which the common sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa, exhibits susceptibility.
