The names AZEITERA and NEGRINHA are synonyms for the variety also known as Negrinha de Freixo in northeastern Portugal. It is a traditional variety developed through centuries of folk selection in the border regions of Spain and Portugal.
The variety belongs to the dual-purpose group; the fruits are suitable for both oil production and table preservation. Mature fruits are black, medium to large in size, spherical or asymmetric in shape, and have a high flesh-to-pit ratio.
The trees are characterized by early bearing and good adaptation to various conditions. The variety possesses frost resistance, but is sensitive to drought and highly alkaline soils.
Oil from this variety has good stability and a specific flavor profile, ranging from herbaceous to spicy and bitter.
