The variety is a traditional Sicilian variety that does not belong to modern hybrid breeding. Its trees are characterized by low vigor, high branching density, and a specific bending of shoots, which makes them suitable for canopy formation in modern high-density and super-intensive orchards.
The fruits of this variety are larger than those of the Arbequina standard. The oil is characterized by a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids. The plant possesses high drought tolerance and the ability to maintain biomass indicators under moisture deficit. The main cultivation area is concentrated in the vicinity of the cities of Catania and Caltagirone.
