The CANETERA variety (also known as Nana, Canetí, Llusió, or Del Riu) is traditional to the Maestrazgo region on the border of Valencia and Catalonia. The trees are characterized by low to medium growth vigor, which allows for use in intensive plantings, and good yield.
The plant is susceptible to Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae). The variety is classified as rare and difficult to propagate, which is why the majority of existing trees are centenarians.
Oil from the fruit of this variety has an intense green color, high stability, and a high polyphenol content. The flavor and aroma profile contains notes of grass, green tomatoes, artichoke, green banana, and almond, balanced by bitterness and mild pungency.
