The plant has medium vigour and a dense, upright canopy. The leaves are elliptical-lanceolate in shape and medium-sized, with a green upper side and a light green underside.

The variety is cultivated primarily in the Pollino and Medio Agri Basento areas in Italy. Carpinegna is an independent variety adapted to local conditions as a result of centuries of cultivation.

The primary purpose of the variety is olive oil production. Carpinegna is included in the list of varieties officially permitted for use in the production of oil with the protected geographical indication Olio Lucano.
