CARMELIÑA is an ancient local olive variety grown in Galicia. The variety was identified and described during scientific research aimed at finding and preserving forgotten olive tree genetic resources; it is not the result of breeding crosses.
The fruits of the variety are characterized by a low weight and a relatively high pit-to-fruit weight ratio. During tree inspections, no signs of diseases requiring special control measures were recorded.
The variety is intended for olive oil production, and current research is aimed at studying the potential of this plant for the development of regional olive growing.
