The Dolce Mele variety (synonym Mele) is historically widespread in the provinces of Bari and Taranto. It is a tree of medium vigor with a spreading, medium-density crown. The fruits have a spherical shape, large size, a high flesh-to-pit ratio, and abundant large lenticels on the skin. The color of the ripe fruit is black.
The variety is early-ripening and demonstrates one of the earliest ripening periods among regional varieties. It belongs to the category of self-incompatible varieties; therefore, it requires the presence of pollinator varieties such as Coratina, Ogliarola barese, or Cellina barese for fruiting.
