The variety is a winter type; the fruits reach harvest maturity in autumn, and consumption is possible during the winter period. It has many historical synonyms, such as Glou Morceau, Beurré d’Arenberg and Hardenpont’s Winterbutterbirne. It is included in the ECPGR reference variety lists for the characterization of pear genetic resources.

It is used in breeding work and as a pollinator for other pear varieties, in particular for the variety Popska. Like many old European varieties, it may show a specific reaction to rootstocks, for example, when grafted onto quince.
