The variety is a hybrid of Rhododendron catawbiense and the variety Mrs. P.D. Williams. It is a vigorous shrub, reaching a height of 1.3 m by 10 years, and up to 2.0 m in height and 2.5 m in width by 20 years. The leaves are dense, dark green, and broadly elliptical in shape.
The flowers are funnel-shaped, about 70 mm in diameter, with ruffled petal edges. The inflorescences are conical, containing 14–17 flowers. The color is pale pinkish-violet with olive-green spots, which change shade to ochre-green.
The plant possesses high winter hardiness down to –35 °C. Flowering is profuse, occurring from late May to mid-June. It is recommended to plant the variety in shaded or semi-shaded locations in light, well-drained soils rich in humus.
