The variety is derived from open-pollinated seedlings of Rhododendron japonicum. The plant is a deciduous shrub that reaches a height and width of about 2 meters by the age of 20 years.
The flowers are broadly funnel-shaped, gathered in large inflorescences, and have an orange-red or salmon-orange hue. Flowering occurs abundantly in late May to early June.
The plant possesses complete winter hardiness and is intended for use in ornamental gardening.
