The variety is autochthonous to the Jura region and is also widespread in Spain and Portugal. It has many synonyms, including Trousseau, Bastardo, Merenzao, and Maturana Tinta. It is classified as an early to mid-season variety.

The berries are small, dark purple in color, and densely clustered. The vine is well-adapted to slate soils and cool mountain climates, however, it is considered demanding to cultivate and requires special attention.

It is used for the production of wines with a deep cherry-red color, aromas of forest berries, and spicy notes. The wines are characterized by balanced acidity, good structure, and a high content of alcohol, polyphenols, and anthocyanins.
