The variety is ancient and of Central European origin. Genetic studies have confirmed that it is the progenitor of a multitude of modern varieties, including Chardonnay. Belina Drobna is not an independent variety but represents a historical synonym for Gouais Blanc.

The variety is classified as a wine grape, although it is historically described as producing wine of mediocre quality. The variety is characterized by significant intraspecific variability, where different biotypes may differ from one another in berry morphology and ripening periods.
