The variety is native to the island of Ikaria and belongs to the category of wine grape varieties intended for winemaking. The name of the variety is presumably linked to the ancient Syrian variety Begler.

Wines made from Begleri possess high acidity, freshness, and a citrus aroma, often compared to the Sauvignon Blanc variety. The variety is adapted to cultivation on poor granite soils in various climatic conditions of the island.
