The variety is a wine grape of the Vitis vinifera L. species, traditionally cultivated in the mountainous areas of the Piedmont region in Italy. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth in the first years of life and the ability to grow at high altitudes. The variety shows low resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew.
The bunches are small, cylindrical or conical in shape, and loose. The small berries are egg-shaped and have very thick skins with a high content of coloring agents and polyphenols. Wines produced from this variety possess good structure, body, and high acidity, which allows them to be used for long aging.
The variety is used primarily in blends to give the wine color and fullness of flavor, although monovarietal vinification is also permitted. It is historically associated with the Susa Valley and is identical to the French variety Persan.
