The variety is the result of a natural cross between Pinot and Heunisch Weiss. It belongs to the wine grape varieties, was widely cultivated in Alsace and Germany in the past, but is currently considered endangered and is extremely rare.
The vines are characterized by vigorous growth and high yield, the flower is hermaphroditic. In terms of resistance to frost and diseases, the variety is comparable to traditional European varieties, but it is susceptible to Botrytis cinerea and chlorosis.
Wines produced from Knipperlé grapes are characterized as smooth, with a simple structure. Their aromatic profile may contain shades of lime, stone fruits, and notes of black pepper.
