The variety is ancient and historically known in Aragon. It has been genetically proven that Benedicto, along with the Albillo Mayor variety, became the ancestor of Tempranillo. Due to its rarity, the variety is almost never found on an industrial scale and is mainly represented in genetic resource collections and experimental plots.
A wine grape variety intended for winemaking, possessing high resistance to heat and drought. It has high winemaking potential and, by a number of indicators, including acidity and pH, can surpass Tempranillo. It is found under the synonyms Tinta Femia and Tinta Femia de Aldan; there is also a genetically related form, Benedicto Falso de Aragón.
