Edelvernatsch is not a separate biological species but represents a group of varieties of the Schiava family. Depending on the classification, the name can refer to various members of the group, including Schiava grossa and Schiava gentile. The varieties have a medium maturity period and are characterized by susceptibility to powdery mildew, downy mildew, and rot.

Morphological traits include a rounded, slightly lobed leaf, and medium or large conical clusters of medium density. The berries are medium-sized, rounded, dark violet in color, and have thin skin and juicy pulp. The grapes are used exclusively for the production of light red wines with moderate alcohol content, soft tannins, and pronounced fruit aromas.
