Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has an ancient history; the first mentions of it date back to 1437. Genetically, it is the result of a natural crossing of an unknown parent with the Schiava variety. After almost complete disappearance at the end of the 19th century due to the phylloxera invasion, the variety was rediscovered in the early 2000s.

Maturity group is medium; the harvest takes place in mid-to-late September. The flower is hermaphroditic. The leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal, five-lobed, deeply dissected, with almost no pubescence. The bunch is small or medium, from medium-density to dense. The berry is small or medium, round or slightly oval, white, with thick skin and a thick waxy bloom.

The variety has low productivity, is sensitive to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and frost, but is capable of growing in poor soils. Historically it was used as a table grape, but it is currently used for the production of still and sparkling white wines with an intense aromatic profile reminiscent of Muscat or Malvasia.
