The variety is a traditional cultivar with a long history, rather than a product of directed breeding. In Germany and Austria, it is known as Trollinger, and it also has the synonyms Edelvernatsch, Vernatsch, and Frankenthal.

The grape produces light to medium-bodied wines with a pink hue, high acidity, and aromas of strawberry, cherry, almond, violet, and red currant. The variety is included in the Italian and EU wine grape registries.
