The Groppello Ruberti variety is grown in Italy, mainly in the provinces of Mantua and Reggio Emilia. The name of the variety is associated with the agronomist Ugo Ruberti, who studied its characteristics in the 19th century. The variety belongs to the group of grapes with compact clusters, the shape of which resembles a pinecone.
The grape is a technical variety and is used to create DOC category wines, such as Lambrusco Mantovano. Drinks made from this variety are distinguished by a ruby-red color, pronounced structure, good acidity and tannin content, with a predominance of notes of cherry, sweet cherry, blackberry, and violet.
Morphologically, the variety is characterized by a medium pentagonal three- or five-lobed leaf. The clusters are of medium size and have a cylindrical compact shape. The berries are dark blue or black in color, rounded, arranged densely, and have a thick skin.
