The variety is a natural hybrid of the Gouais blanc variety and an unknown parent. The name comes from the Old French word for "crow," which reflects the dark, almost black color of the berries. The plant is characterized by a medium ripening period and bisexual flowers.
The leaves are large, rounded, five-lobed, and slightly lobed. Red internodes are prominent on the shoots. The clusters are medium to large in size, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, often with a wing, and are loose or of medium density.
The berries are small or medium, round, covered with a thick waxy bloom, and have thin skin and juicy flesh. The variety is distinguished by high yield, but is susceptible to frost, fungal diseases, anthracnose, and flavescence dorée, and is also at risk of wind damage.
Wines from this variety are characterized by lightness, a fruity character, and low tannin content due to the thin skin of the berries. The variety is often used in blends, in particular with Gamay or Cabernet Franc.
